Health & Safety

We operate a Zero Harm initiative to eliminate Incidents & Accidents in the workplace engaging with our operational staff throughout the business. All experienced plant operators are independently assessed regularly to ensure they carry out plant operations safely in our Quarries, Ready Mixed Concrete, Asphalt, Surfacing and Recycling operations. Site Safety Visits and Inspection reports are carried out independently every six months across all operational sites.

Our core business is manufacturing Heavy Building Materials, our products are used extensively in the construction industry improving and maintaining the built environment. We also have a duty to look after the natural environment as a result of our Quarrying activities. One of our sand & Gravel quarries, Caistron in Northumberland which is now in aftercare is a fine example of a restored site after operations have ceased. The restoration of Caistron consists of Lakes and islands where bird populations are flourishing. Bird hides have been erected on site overlooking the wetland area in May 2016. The restoration work carried out has left no evidence of a once working quarry. At Low Hedgeley Quarry we continue to progressively restore this operational site back to land for Agricultural use and Lakes.

All of our Heavy Building material waste is recycled into secondary aggregates; typically Type 1 recycled material which ensures none of our waste material goes to landfill.

In our Readymixed Concrete operation, Water usage is kept to a minimum through recycling and bore hole extraction of water.

Our fleet of Truckmixers and Tippers are tracked and monitored to operate efficiently helping to reduce carbon emissions.
